Bern is Switzerland's federal city and the administrative heart of the country's customs framework. The Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (BAZG/OFDF) is headquartered here, making Bern the regulatory reference point for every customs procedure affecting Swiss road freight. Although Bern itself is not a major cargo terminal, the city's A1/A6 motorway junction places it on direct routes to Zurich, Basel, and Geneva.

Switzerland participates in the Common Transit Convention yet is not an EU member, so shipments crossing into Swiss territory require specific customs documentation distinct from intra-EU movements.
